Hailing from the heart of England and the ancient lands of Sherwood Forest, Arx Atrata has spent more than a decade crafting atmospheric black metal shaped by melancholy, solitude and expansive soundscapes.
What began in 2013 as an anonymous project eventually revealed itself as the work of multi-instrumentalist Ben Sizer, whose vision has guided every release from the acclaimed debut Oblivion through Spiritus In Terra, The Path Untravelled and the instrumental split The Warrior Cycle.
Released in July 2024, A Reckoning marks the project's return after several years of relative silence. Building on the foundations established throughout Arx Atrata's earlier work, the album combines atmospheric black metal with mournful melodies, layered synth textures and a strong sense of place and mood. Influences ranging from Coldworld, Agalloch, Lustre, Paysage d'Hiver, Summoning, Winterfylleth and Fen can be felt throughout the record, though the result remains unmistakably Arx Atrata.
Across seven tracks, A Reckoning explores themes of reflection, loss and personal confrontation. The album retains the project's characteristic sense of melancholy while presenting some of its most focused and confident songwriting to date.
The cover artwork was once again created by Namurian Visions, who previously worked on The Path Untravelled. While intentionally abstract, the artwork reflects themes that run throughout the album, including humanity's uneasy relationship with the natural world and the search for something spiritual rooted beyond human interaction.
