Founded in 2009 in Waidhofen an der Ybbs, Richthammer have spent the past years shaping their own take on black/death metal through steady live activity, lineup changes, and a clear sense of artistic development. After an early period marked by local shows and band contests, the band recorded their first demo, Gematert Geschunden Verheert, in 2012 at Fast Forward Studio in Vienna. More live work followed, including appearances at Donauinselfest, international shows, and support slots for bands such as Týr and Moonsorrow.

The band’s next major step came with the concept album Ascheland, which was released in March 2018 through Studio Hundert and produced by Jay Hundert. The following Ascheland Tour took Richthammer to festivals such as Kaltenbach Open Air, MetalDays, Sick Midsummer, and Donauinselfest, alongside support shows with Dimmu Borgir, Rotting Christ, Carpathian Forest, Nocte Obducta, Bethlehem, Theotoxin, and Noctem. After further lineup changes in 2019 and the enforced break from 2020 onward, the band used the time to regroup and prepare the next chapter.

“Durch Trieb zur Qual” presents Richthammer in that current phase: focused, severe, and intent on pushing their morbid, abstract vision further. Recorded at Woodshed Studio in Germany and produced, mixed, and mastered by Victor Bullock, the single points toward the band’s ongoing work on a new album with a bilingual approach.
