Singapore’s longest-running underground band marks four decades of independent music, uncompromising spirit, and commitment to its roots.

Opposition Party celebrate their 40th anniversary this year, marking four decades as one of the most enduring names in Singapore’s underground music scene.

Formed in 1986 by guitarist and vocalist Francis Frightful, the band began with a raw hardcore punk sound driven by frustration, a strong DIY ethic, and a refusal to conform. Over the years, their music developed into a powerful mix of hardcore punk, crossover thrash, and metal, while their intense live performances earned them a lasting reputation within the underground community.

To mark the anniversary, Opposition Party are preparing a special compilation featuring songs from across the band’s career. The release will trace their journey from their early hardcore punk beginnings through the crossover thrash years and beyond, offering both a look back at their history and a reminder that the ideas behind the band remain as relevant as ever.

Reflecting on the milestone, Francis Frightful says:

“Punk and metal were never just styles of music to me. They became part of who I am. I’m grateful to everyone who has supported us over the years. This anniversary belongs to every friend, supporter, promoter, and band that helped keep the underground alive. As long as I can still make noise and have something to say, I’ll keep doing what I’ve always done.”

Alongside the compilation, Opposition Party will celebrate the anniversary with special live performances and other activities throughout the year.

Four decades after their formation, the band remain a constant presence in the underground, not because they followed trends, but because they stayed true to themselves and to the culture that shaped them.
