Recorded during Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, On (Not) Losing Hope captures Septa in a raw and inward-looking state. The release moves between paralysis and release, despair and the stubborn refusal to surrender to it, offering the first glimpse of a band finding its voice again under impossible circumstances.
"This represents our collective state of mind being trapped in-between places, hoping for things that will never come, reminiscing about our loss," says vocalist Eugene Tymchyk. "Not a huge comeback, but something more reflective of the world, the times, the country, the band."
Septa were formed in 2010 in Odesa by vocalist Eugene Tymchyk and guitarist Alexander Kostuchenko. Across the years that followed, the band built a distinct catalogue through a restless mix of post-rock, alternative metal, post-hardcore, mathcore and progressive extremity. Their debut The Lover arrived in 2013, followed by the darker and heavier Destroyer in 2014. In 2016, Sounds Like Murder pushed the band further, becoming one of the best-selling albums on Bandcamp in its release month, topping Ukrainian streaming charts, and winning Best Ukrainian Metal Album at the BUMA awards.
Their 2019 full-length Bitten by the Serpent of the Kingdom of the Spirit expanded that path into a more theatrical and intense form, built around a concept rooted in persecution, climate collapse and human extinction. The album's opening track "Emet" was later selected for the official in-game radio of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, bringing Septa's music to a far wider audience. The band have also shared stages with Stone Sour.
On (Not) Losing Hope is out now via Venona Records.
