[news] Matalobos Announce Their Third Studio Album "Phantasmagoria: Hexed Lands"
Four years after their last release, Mexican death-doom metal band Matalobos returns with their highly anticipated third studio album, Phantasmagoria: Hexed Lands. Scheduled for release in February 2025, this conceptual album marks the band’s most ambitious effort to date, intertwining the haunting beauty of Mexican folklore with the crushing intensity of death-doom metal.

Phantasmagoria: Hexed Lands delves deep into eerie tales inspired by traditional Mexican legends, weaving witchcraft, loss, and haunting narratives into its theatrical plot. Each song embodies the band’s signature brooding melodies and crushing riffs while paying homage to the atmospheric and emotional depth of their cultural heritage.
The album’s soundscape is enriched by cinematic storytelling, offering fans of Opeth, Katatonia, and Swallow the Sun a captivating blend of melancholic beauty and powerful heaviness.
Produced by Matalobos and Rubén Sánchez, the album was recorded and mixed at Urvn Studios in León, Mexico, and mastered by Jari Lindholm (Enshine, Exgenesis) in Stockholm, Sweden. Featuring collaborations with artists such as Rich Marmolejo (Dark Matter), Gabriela González (Sonny Beckett), and Tano Padilla (Mariachi Trovadores de México), the album seamlessly blends traditional Mexican elements with the band’s death-doom foundation.
The album artwork was created by Manolo González Zavala.
