On September 5th, Northern Silence Productions, in alliance with Brilliant Emperor, present the highly anticipated eighth album from Australian black metal veterans Pestilential Shadows, entitled “Wretch”. Active since 2003, the band have built one of the most respected catalogues in Australian black metal, known for their blend of drama, darkness and a sound that is both regal and gritty.

Formed over two decades ago and led by founding guitarist and vocalist Balam, Pestilential Shadows have consistently stood apart from their country’s extreme metal landscape. While many Australian acts lean toward chaos or overly clean execution, Pestilential Shadows have long embraced black metal classicism, weaving emotion, melancholy and grandeur into their work.

“Wretch” arrives only a year after 2024’s “Devil’s Hammer”, a rare moment of immediacy from a band known for leaving long gaps between releases. Substantially and simply titled, the album pushes further into darker and more abrasive territory, while remaining firmly rooted in the essence of black metal — meditations on death, decay and the beyond.

The album’s eight songs span 49 minutes, balancing violence and solemnity with remarkable pacing. Of particular note is “Where Sunlight Goes to Die”, featuring guest choral vocals by Dis Pater of Midnight Odyssey.

Recorded at Scourge Studios and mixed by Balam, “Wretch” was mastered by Krvna Vatra (Krvna), who also contributed to “Devil’s Hammer”. The result is a professional yet raw sound — crisp and effervescent, but equally capable of delivering the band’s most gnarly passages with an ethereal edge.

Artwork was once again provided by Greallach Art, whose stark and austere visuals reinforce the band’s uncompromising aesthetic.
